Glimpse into Gilmore: failure is not an option for effective downhole solutions

Posted: April 7, 2020

Earlier this year, Gilmore added another essential name to its expanding team in the shape of Jean-Louis Doguet, who joins as Account Manager, Business Development.

Jean represents another highly experienced addition to the line-up with more than 20 years in the energy segment, primarily focused in the downhole tools business comprising modular logging, directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing.

Throughout his career, Jean has contributed to some of the world’s largest oilfield service companies, domestically and abroad, and is keen to build Gilmore’s downhole solutions business.

“During my career I’ve had the opportunity to work for several of the major service providers, enabling me to build a wide range of contacts and experience within key firms with whom we partner. Our focus is bidirectional; we will continue our historical energy solutions work, while exploring and developing viable opportunities in wider markets outside of energy, as Gilmore’s flow control solutions can be applied in multiple industries”.

In the team’s core oil and gas activities, Jean believes performance and reliability are the primary drivers by which operators measure downhole tools and their chosen service providers: “Operators are continuously monitoring MTBF, or Mean Time Between Failure, hours of downhole tools. I ran these tools in the field for years and I understand the nature of failures and their ramifications.”

If a key valve does not deliver the durability required and withstand demanding high shock conditions or debris laden drilling fluids, then tool reliability is at risk. Jean reveals that when rig spread rates are at $1 million a day and a trip event could cost $50,000 an hour, any resultant downtime would be seriously expensive.

“Service companies supplying tools that repeatedly fail on a well or project are severely penalized with loss of contracts and awards, and soon after, the entire industry will be aware of it.”

Jean recognizes how Gilmore has prioritized the importance of reliability over sixty years in the business. “At Gilmore, we suggest failure is not an option, neither for our clients nor us, and this is certainly the case with downhole solutions. Our clients trust that our products will exceed operational requirements. The bottom line is not one level of this business can afford unnecessary failures, ever.”

Pushing the envelope regarding product design, such as with Gilmore’s shear seal technology, offering proven debris tolerant sealing capabilities ideal for use downhole, is where Jean believes the team can find that extra capacity for longevity and dependability, “Our manufacturing ideology and our testing protocols are world-class. At Gilmore we enjoy what we do, and we take pride in how we do it.

“We look forward to future partnerships and product development challenges, not only with an established and valued client family in oil and gas, but potentially in new spheres of operation.”
